Wood River Valley
Our shop is a mile down the road in Ketchum. Broken panes, failed insulated glass, shower enclosures, mirrors and skylights, for a valley we have worked in for 36 years.
Of the four towns in the Wood River Valley, Sun Valley is the one we can reach fastest. Our shop sits on Lewis Street in Ketchum, essentially next door. If you are in Sun Valley and something has broken, you are as close to us as anyone gets.
We have worked in this valley for 36 years, and a good share of that work has been Sun Valley glass: window walls, shower enclosures, mirrors, skylights and the ordinary repairs that come with any house.
Sun Valley sits right around 6,000 feet, and altitude is harder on glass than most people realise. Sunlight at elevation carries more ultraviolet, which is what fades floors, rugs and furniture over a few seasons. Thin mountain air also means faster temperature swings between a sunny afternoon and a cold night, and glass expands and contracts with every one of them.
That is the argument for a Low-E coating on anything facing the sun. It is a microscopically thin layer on the glass that reflects heat and cuts ultraviolet while still letting light through. On a big south or west elevation it changes how the room feels in August and how much heat you lose in January, and it slows the fading.
The same swings are what eventually kill an insulated glass unit. Two panes are sealed around a spacer with dry gas between them, and every expansion and contraction works that seal a little. When it finally goes, humid air gets in and condenses where you cannot wipe it. That is the haze people describe as a window that has gone cloudy.
Almost always the glass unit rather than the window. If the frame is sound we replace the sealed unit and leave the frame in place, which costs far less than a new window and means no trim work, no paint and no disruption to the opening.
Shower glass is tempered, so when it goes it comes apart into small blunt pieces rather than shards. Keep the hardware, since hinges and handles can often be reused, and send us the opening size or a photo.
Glass problems tend to be found on arrival rather than when they happen. A failed seal, a cracked pane or a sagging shower door does not get worse from being ignored, with one exception: a chipped or cracked piece of tempered glass is under tension and will eventually let go on its own. Those are worth dealing with first.
